Der Mittelmeerraum ist reich an Reptilien. Während in Dänemark 5 Arten leben, sind es in Deutschland schon 12 und in Griechenland leben bereits 48 Arten. Diese Verteilung hängt damit zusammen, dass die Reptilien als wärmeliebende Tiere die südlichen Standorte bevorzugen und dass sie erst nach der letzten Eiszeit vor 10 000 Jahren aus dem Mittelmeerraum nach Mitteleuropa eingewandert sind. So findet man in Griechenland neben zahlreichen südlichen Arten auch die  Blindschleiche, Ringelnatter und die Glattnatter. Andere Arten, die in Deutschland nur an wenigen Orten und da meist selten vorkommen, können in Griechenland weit verbreitet sein. Dazu gehören z.B. die Mauereidechse, die Smaragdeidechse, Würfel- und Äskulapnatter. Ein weiterer Grund für den Artenreichtum der griechischen Echsen sind die Meeresarme und Gebirge, die von den Reptilien kaum überwunden werden konnten. In den isolierten Räumen, insbesondere auf den Inseln, konnten sich Rassen und in manchen Fällen auch eigene, ganz eng verbreitete Arten entwickeln (endemische Arten).

So findet man auf der Kykladeninsel Milos die nur hier vorkommende Milos-Eidechse, die durch ihre auffallende Färbung gut bestimmt werden kann. Die schönste  und auffälligste Eidechse ist die Riesensmaragdeidechse. Sie ist mit 60 cm Gesamtlänge nicht nur eine der größten Eidechsen in Griechenland, sondern mit ihrer grünen Rückenfärbung auch eine der schönsten Echsen.

Der Monarchfalter besitzt wie seine Raupen eine Warntracht.
